Lapland, Finland: Husky Safari

As someone with an adorable husky at home, I’ve always wanted to see her play in the snow.

So.. what could be better than a whole team of huskies to play with in Finland?

I found a tour that not only includes a husky safari with a team of huskies well-cared for and bred by the Saija Lodge, but also includes cross-country skiing school, a snowmobile safari, snowshoeing and a smoke sauna, and a reindeer farm. Also, you get to stay in the Saija Lodge, a traditional wooden Finnish lodge with log cabins for private apartments.

How’s that for a Christmas vacation? (I wish.)

More photos to follow. Including, of course, gratuitous irresistible husky puppy photos.

Huskies!

A day of training and learning to manage your team of huskies, and another day of husky safari adventuring.

Saija Lodge.

The lodge was built in the early 90s purely out of wood, with lots of small wooden cottages surrounding the area, each with their own sauna! The lodge also has a traditional Finnish smoke sauna, and you can jump into an ice hole in the lake to cool off.

Reindeer Farm.

You get to visit a local reindeer farm, chat with the owner, and if you’re feeling adventurous, try some smoked reindeer sandwiches.

Snowmobiling.

Crossing frozen lakes and navigating through snowy forests at pretty high speeds. Awesome.
